UC San Diego students can now add Native 

American and Indigenous Studies to their degrees

UC San Diego students can now study indigenous communities in the United States and abroad by adding a concentration in Native American and Indigenous Studies (NAIS) to their degrees. Undergraduate students may pursue a minor. And, unusually, graduate students from any department at UC San Diego can complete a degree at NAIS.

This new doctoral program draws on disciplines ranging from anthropology to physics to environmental studies. Andrew Jolivette, chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies at UC San Diego and director of the NAIS program, explained that students will build a solid foundation at NAIS. As part of the degree, they will analyze the historical and contemporary contexts of indigenous communities and understand the intellectual and methodological contributions of NAIS to academia, higher education and the general public.

Jolivette said the degree will prepare students for careers in public policy, law, health, the arts, environmental science and cultural ecology and 21st century leadership on important issues related to Native Americans and indigenous communities.

San Diegans are about to get a new dumpster

The first green bins for food waste collection hit the streets of San Diego on Wednesday in Barrio Logan and Logan Heights. By August, the city expects everyone receiving public trash and recycling collections to be sorted and put all organic materials into these new carts. The city will empty this green waste every week.

All Californians are expected to do this under a new state law aimed at eliminating food waste from landfills, a major source of methane gas that contributes to the planet’s rapid warming. .

The delivery will first take place for households with waste days on Wednesdays. Once the city runs out of those homes, which is expected to take several months, San Diego will move into homes Thursday and then Friday.

Board of Supervisors approves plan

to revitalize Campo Road Corridor

The County Board of Supervisors has approved a plan that will revitalize the main commercial strip and adjacent residential area along Campo Street in Casa de Oro.

The Campo Street Revitalization Special Plan outlines a new vision for the 60-acre area centered on Campo Street between Rogers Street and Granada Street. The goal of the plan is to transform the area from a commercial drive-thru to a purpose-built “Main Street”.

The proposed changes will allow for better access to public transport, walking and cycling and transform the corridor into a welcoming place for local residents and visitors.

The plan includes updated traffic management options, such as roundabouts and enhanced left lanes, wider sidewalks, on-street parking and protected bike lanes.

It also outlines plans to change zoning laws to allow more mixed-use housing development along the street. Current zoning only allows two-story mixed-use development with commercial businesses on the ground floor and residential units above.

Comic Con Museum opens two new exhibits on Feb. 4

The Comic Con Museum in Balboa Park is inviting visitors to two new exhibits opening Saturday, February 4 – “Animation Academy: From Pens to Pixels,” and “Cover Story.”
