The digital marketing industry hasn’t been the same since Jon Zacharias came to the scene in 2019. The SEO Duel saw the desperate need to change the way e-commerce companies were driving traffic and changed the rules of the game on its own with its company, GR0.

Zacharias stumbled upon the value of search engine optimization while studying law. “I have a law degree, and when I was in law school, I worked for one of my dad’s friends in a classroom law firm,” she recalls. “I realized that I was much more interested in getting cases than in running them.”
The legal industry was starting to get used to SEO, but it wasn’t seriously used in e-commerce yet, and Zacharias was “obsessed” with learning everything he could about it.
“I spent the next seven or eight years, from 2011 to 2019 – when we were starting the business – perfecting the science behind SEO, and once I got that, I basically started using tactics that had never been used in e-commerce. It was really like the second wave of SEO, he says.
But he needed a partner and he found him unexpectedly. “I sobered up in November 2016 with the support of [the drug rehabilitation center] CRI-Help,” says Zacharias, and there he met his future business partner, Kevin Miller. “We became best friends instantly, talking every second,” recalls Zacharias. “I feel like my whole life changed as soon as I met him.”
Miller himself was a digital marketing expert, working at Google and Opendoor. He quickly saw the possibilities of Zechariah’s knowledge and knew they had to take advantage of it.
“I was showing him how to increase traffic with SEO and he liked it so much that he said,” Let’s just start a business and do it for as many brands as possible directly to consumers because it’s such a powerful channel, “recalls Zachariasz. “Everyone trusts Google, and of course, if you can rank high on Google for certain words, it’s extremely valuable to the customer.”
