Human-focused content will take your site to the next level

Me: “I think I need to lose a few pounds and get fitter. I think I should start cleaning up my diet and exercise more often.

Friend: “I feel like you live in your 40s. Of course you don’t need to do that anymore. Just go to the nearest supplement store, get a fat burner and some teas that are for this purpose. There are some minor surgical operations which you can do to achieve results within a day.

Me: “Supplements? Surgeries? Dude, they’re literally 5 pounds. I’ve only been working for three months, and that’s more than enough.

Friend: “Three months?! You’re just saying that? Who has time for that? Beach season is coming. We’re in the age of speed. Turn it up, dinosaur.

We tend to prefer shortcuts. It makes sense to you, the reader, doesn’t it? Why should you take a longer route if it takes you to the same place?

Since everything is faster now, these shortcuts have even accelerated. For example, if a SaaS product saves a business 30 minutes a day, it will be sold for several billion dollars.

But every entrepreneur, one day or another, meets their Internet incubator – Google. If you need to reach people out there and showcase your services, you need to do it on Google (about 4.3 billion people use Google.)

But a shortcut is always lucrative, isn’t it?

The thing about Google is that everyone is trying to fool it. For example, let’s compare the searches for the term “SEO tricks” versus “SEO quality content”.

Although these images are not conclusive, it is obvious that more people are looking for how to rank their websites according to SEO tricks.

I have been working on a content marketing strategy that has a duration of 12-24 months. So although it is still early to judge, I tried two methods – Paid vs Organic.

I focused on the product and had an external consultant work on a PPC Google campaign(s). I gave the person (or agency, mainly) a budget with some suggestions of what areas I work in. I promised myself that no matter what happened, I would not return the financing for three months.

The total cost was a little over $6k. I even wrote an article about it.

After those months I noticed that the traction was not as expected. That’s why I intervened and took over.

You: “But wait, you’re not an SEO expert? Isn’t this micro-managing?

Me: “Correct! I’m not an SEO expert. I started looking for one. But I’m not giving that person the whole wheel. It’s my startup, SEO expert or not; I know my startup better than anyone.

So I started improving my website in terms of site speed. Again, this is a no-brainer for me. I don’t need an SEO consultant to tell me that my website needs to be lightning fast. We are in the age of acceleration, remember?

Then I started with my long-term strategy.

Me: “Hello! Thank you for accepting my proposal. I need someone who knows SEO to guide me through this journey. You will be my mentor. However, I will be the executor. I will write all blog articles based on the Keywords I’m Researching I know my customer base, and I’m pretty sure with your advice I’ll be able to hit them right.

He: “Every time. Sounds good to me. Let’s meet weekly for reviews. Ask me questions and I will answer them. I will also review your website and give you some useful improvements. But here is my first advice – write for humans.

You might think, “It goes without saying, write for humans. Why? Are we writing for robots?

But then I looked back two years ago, and I remember hiring a blog writer to populate content on my startup blog.

What was the content? I didn’t care if it was in the same industry. I didn’t have time to check every article. So, if the blog writer wanted to write about business related movies, I wouldn’t say no. But then I personally began to implement the concept – writing for humans.

That’s it. That’s all I needed. I wanted to start writing high quality content but needed some expert guidance. The problem with the world of SEO, especially the freelancing SEO market, is that everyone is trying to push some services like:

Many, and I mean many, of freelancers treat you as an SEO client who would be happy to just follow a few automated steps that will reflect well on your numbers.

For that reason, more than three freelancers I met with rejected the concept of leadership or meetings. My reasoning is that it’s probably just not that easy in terms of quick money (Even though I paid whatever hourly rate they suggested.)

Keep in mind that the website is fairly new, so I wasn’t really expecting anything from PPC or organic growth. First, I started looking in terms of clicks when I had my PPC campaign versus nowadays.

By the way, that stroll in the middle was due to listing on Flippa. I also wrote an article about this (Gosh, I write a lot of articles.)

However, if you look at the PPC result, the clicks were better than in the last three months. They were also slightly better than the three months that followed. So then, the conclusion would be that I should stick with PPC because it obviously results in more clicks, right? Not exactly.

I then looked at another obvious variable – impressions. I want to know if Google started showing the articles I spent time writing (because it’s for humans.)

Then I saw the chart, and I couldn’t have been more sure that this is the perfect advice to give – write for humans.

While some marketing executives don’t consider impressions as crucial as clicks, it does mean that Google is starting to rank my content. They now got the message that I wrote for people.

Do you know the best way to fool the Google algorithm? To follow what is logical.

Then, when I looked at the Semrush data of organic search positions, I was actually proud to focus only on value-added content compared to PPC.

I mean, look at this. My website is a freelance marketplace focused on the business investment industry.

This is far from success when it comes to SEO or the marketing of a startup. However, it is an assurance that writing for audiences that are not yet there could result in healthy traffic.

Write for humans. I’m not an SEO expert and I don’t want to be. I am simply a business consultant trying to explore the world of entrepreneurship. How? With the help of others out there, including SEO experts.

It is not easy to write thirty articles (that’s how many I have written on my website by the way), knowing for sure that most of them will not be read. That is the biggest challenge. The feeling that this time is in vain and could actually produce nothing.

However, like freelancing, meditating, and fishing, SEO writing incorporated with patience could be the deal-breaker.
